In order to further promote the spirit of scientists and stimulate teenagers' interest in science, the first report of the 'Academicians and Experts Campus Tour' series,co-hosted by Jianghan University and No.11 Middle School of Wuhan was held on October 25. Academician Xie Lili delivered a wonderful science popularization lecture for students from No.11 Middle School of Wuhan.
Xie Lili,an expert in earthquake and disaster prevention engineering in China, currently serves as an honorary professor of Jianghan University and chief scientist of Hubei (Wuhan) Institute of Explosion and Blasting Technology. During the report, Xie introduced the causes and prevention methods of earthquake disasters in detail to the students through the combination of pictures and examples, and revealed that the root cause of earthquake disasters is unqualified civil engineering. After the lecture, he presented Trembling Earth,Chinese Traditional Culture and other popular science and culture books to the No.11 Middle School of Wuhan, encouraging students to explore,to ask questions, and to foster their interest in science.
Following the lecture, Dr. Liu Xuwen, a member of the State Key Laboratory of Precision Blasting, conducted field scientific experiments to popularize the combustion and explosion phenomena closely related to life. And then he invited the students to participate in the explosive blasting experiment on stage. All the students exclaimed one after another at the roar of the explosion and the dazzling fire. During the interactive session, advanced technologies such as high-speed photography were utilized to visualize the transient explosion process, fully demonstrating the technology and art in 'precision blasting'.
As a vivid practice of Jianghan University, “Academicians and Experts Campus Tour' series aims at integrating science and education resources of colleges and universities and supporting the development of science education in primary and secondary schools. In recent years, adhering to the concept of collaborative education, JHU has exerted the strengths in combining science and education, and introduced popular science lectures into primary and secondary schools in order to broaden students' horizons as well as inspire teenagers’ enthusiasm for understanding science, advocating science and pursuing science. JHU has demonstrated its achievements and contributed its strength in the process of overall enhancement of citizens’ scientific literacy as well as cultivation of reserve talents for scientific and technological innovation.
