Jianghan University (JHU), a multidisciplinary university, is located in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in central China. It was a merger in October 2001 of the former Jianghan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Hankou Branch), Wuhan Education Institute, and Wuhan Staff Medical College. The university is directly administered by Wuhan Municipal Government and partially by Hubei Provincial Government.
JHU has been developing into a prestigious high-level local university with distinctive characteristics since the merging approved by the Ministry of Education in 2001. With its dedication to its home city of Wuhan, the province of Hubei, and the nation at large, JHU aims for high-quality student cultivation and university development. JHU is home to 17 academic schools, providing 74 undergraduate programs, 26 master’s degree programs, and a prestigious first-level doctoral degree program across 11 primary disciplines. These disciplines encompass a broad spectrum, including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, management, and arts. Furthermore, JHU boasts a post-doctoral program and has been recognized for its academic excellence with 5 province-level key disciplines and 5 province-level clusters of featured disciplines. In materials science, chemistry, environment/ecology, and clinical medicine categories JHU ranked top 1% worldwide according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) Global Ranking.
As to the full-time students, JHU currently boasts a vibrant student body of 19,821 domestic undergraduates, 2,589 postgraduates and doctoral candidates, as well as 209 international undergraduates. The academic staff totals 1,405, among which 232 are professors and 744 individuals hold doctoral degrees. JHU also boasts 2 esteemed academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and one professor is an academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering.
A group of 20 faculty members have been recognized for their excellence, featuring on prestigious national talent programs such as the Changjiang Scholars Program and The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Additionally, many teachers have been awarded with different prestigious academic titles of national level, demonstrating the high reputation and influence of JHU.
JHU boasts well-equipped teaching facilities and excellent teaching conditions. The campus covers an area of 135.8 hectares, with a total construction area reaching 904,200 square meters. This includes 108,100 square meters designated for classrooms and 112,700 square meters for laboratories and practical training areas. The value of teaching and research equipment amounts to 956 million yuan. The university library houses 2.2793 million volumes of print books and an extensive collection of 3.0647 million electronic books and periodicals, providing ample resources for scholarly exploration and learning.
JHU adheres to the basic task of “fostering virtue through education” and focuses on nurturing capable young people with an all-round moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic grounding, in addition to a hard-working spirit. The university takes pride in its academic offerings, which include 7 nationally recognized and 25 provincially distinguished first-class undergraduate programs. Over the past three years, undergraduate students have demonstrated remarkable scholarly and creative prowess, with 814 academic papers and artistic works published and an impressive 6,863 awards at or above the provincial level in various academic or sports competitions. In the realm of sports, undergraduate students have achieved remarkable success, garnering a total of 13 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze medals at the Olympic Games, Asian Games, or FISU World University Games. Ji Bowen, a student from JHU Physical Education School, secured the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The JHU Women’s Football Club, founded on the strength of the university’s women’s football team, has achieved four consecutive championships in the Women’s Super League in China.
JHU takes the responsibility for serving the local development with its application-oriented contribution in scientific and technological innovation. In recent 5 years, the university has undertaken more than 1500 funded scientific research projects across various disciplines.
Academician XIE Xianqi’s team has made significant contributions to pivotal national strategic projects and regional ones. Professor PENG Hai’s team has achieved a breakthrough with the invention of the Polynucleotide Polymorphism (MNP) Labelling Method, which is conducive to the forming of China’s first industry standard to support the robust derivative variety system under the Seed Law.
Professor HU Changfeng’s research team has pioneered microalgae biotechnology, which has been successfully implemented in critical areas and resulted in great economic benefits.
JHU is committed to internationalization and an open approach to education, and pursues these in a variety of ways. The strategic cooperation has been established with various government departments, businesses, and institutions all over China. JHU has also entered into partnerships with over 74 tertiary institutions or civil society structures from 24 countries or regions. As fruits of such, the Spanish Language Center, a cooperative effort with Hispania, escuela de español, and the Sustainable Chemical Optoelectronic Materials Research Base are notable examples.
Among its international endeavors, JHU has launched Sino-foreign cooperative education initiatives with the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest, Ireland. Students at JHU enjoy the opportunity to attend various exchange programs with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, South Korea, and others.
