JHU Hosts the 2024 Wuhan International Symposium on Acupuncture-Moxibustion

From November 1st to 3rd, the 2024 Wuhan International Symposium on Acupuncture-Moxibustion was held in the Science and Innovation Building at Jianghan University (JHU). Co-hosted by the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies (WFAS) and JHU, the event was organized by the School of Medicine and the Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion at JHU. Focusing on the theme “Inheriting and Innovating Traditional Acupuncture-Moxibustion Techniques,” the symposium fostered a collaborative discussion on the future applications and development of acupuncture-moxibustion in modern medicine. The opening ceremony was attended by JHU Vice President Zhang Hongxing, along with key personnel from the Foreign Affairs Department, the Scientific Research Department and the School of Medicine. Yang Yuyang, Executive Deputy Secretary-General of the WFAS, presided over the opening ceremony.

On behalf of JHU, Vice President Zhang Hongxing extended a warm welcome to the assembled experts and guests. He highlighted JHU's ongoing commitment to advancing research and education in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture-moxibustion. Moreover, he shared the university’s vision to enhance international exchanges and cooperation, thereby making a positive contribution to global health endeavors.

Professor Sun Guojie, a nationally renowned TCM practitioner congratulated the successful convening of the symposium. He noted that the symposium serves  not only as an academic exchange platform for acupuncture but also as an important opportunity to promote the culture of TCM. He encouraged young scholars and researchers to persist in their acupuncture studies, continuously striving for the preservation and innovation of TCM acupuncture.

Professor Yang Jinsheng, Secretary-General of the WFAS, stated in his address that acupuncture-moxibustion, a pivotal element of traditional medicine, is gaining wider international recognition through modern scientific research. This symposium serves as a platform for scholars from around the world to engage in mutual learning and cooperation, contributing to the globalization and modernization of the discipline of acupuncture-moxibustion.

Following the opening ceremony, sixteen experts presented their academic findings and practical demonstrations. Among them were Professor Liu Baoyan, President of the WFAS; Professor Zhang Hongxing; Professor Yang Jinsheng; Professor Samy A. Nasef, Dean of Physical Therapyat theEgyptian Chinese University; Professor Roger Caovan, President of the National Higher Council of Traditional Acupuncture; and Professor Jing XiangHong, Director of the Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.

At the closing ceremony, Professor Liu Baoyan summarized the symposium and expressed high hopes for the future globalization of acupuncture-moxibustion. He noted that the symposium not only illustrated the diverse applications of acupuncture-moxibustion in modern medicine, but also provided a nurturing platform


for young scholars. He hoped that research in this field would contribute to scientific innovation and improve public health. In his address, Professor Zhang Hongxing thanked all the experts for their support and participation. He reaffirmed JHU’s commitment to advancing the research and development of acupuncture-moxibustion and to promoting international academic exchanges, thereby contributing to the globalization of TCM.
