JHU News On April 9th, student members of the Communist Party of China from the School of Optoelectronic Materials and Technology visited the Boxue Kindergarten in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone to carry out a science popularization education activity titled “Learn simple science today for advanced science tomorrow”. The student Party member volunteers conducted science knowledge lectures and interactive experiments, etc, allowing the children of the kindergarten to explore the charm of scientific knowledge firsthand and stimulating their interest in learning and exploration.

The volunteers explained the operation process and principles of the chemical experiments to the children in a simple and understandable way, and answered their questions one by one, such as “Why does the balloon on the bottle get ‘swollen’?” and “Why does the purple sweet potato powder change color?”

In the subsequent group operation experiments, the volunteers carefully guided the children to conduct the “inflating” experiment where white vinegar and baking soda react to produce carbon dioxide, as well as the “color-changing” test of anthocyanin in response to pH levels. Through these activities, they popularized chemical knowledge such as pressure equilibrium and acid-base reactions, allowing the children to personally experience the magical charm of science and encouraging them to establish scientific ideals from a young age and cultivate practical abilities.

This activity is one of the “Science Popularization into Campus” serial activities of JHU. It is also a vivid practice for the School of Optoelectronic Materials and Technology to give full play to the resource advantages of universities, carry out university-local cooperation, and serve the local area. The activity combines professional knowledge with volunteer service. Through vivid and interesting small experiments, it plants the seeds of science in the hearts of children, cultivates their interest in loving science, and helps them establish the ideal of serving the country with science and technology. In the future, JHU will continue to promote the “Popular Science into Campus” activity, enter more primary and secondary schools and kindergartens, carry out a series of popular science education activities with diverse forms and rich content, and let the light of science light up the paths of children’s growth and exploration.
