JHU Student Wins First Bronze Medal at World Weightlifting Championships

Exciting news has arrived from Forde, Norway! At the recently concluded women’s 48kg Group A final of the 2025 IWF World Weightlifting Championships, Li Shumiao, a 2023 student majoring in Sports Training from the School of Physical Education, clinched a bronze medal in the Clean & Jerk with a successful lift of 111kg, and also secured fourth place in the overall total.

Marking the inaugural world championships since the post-Paris Olympic weightlifting category reforms, this event witnessed exceptionally intense competition. Li Shumiao and her teammate Zhu Qiulian, entered the Group A final as the youngest athletes in the field. In their maiden appearance at the world championships, they showcased the potential and responsibility of China's new generation of athletes, securing the historic first medal in the new 48kg weight class.

It is reported that despite an unfavorable standing in the snatch segment, Li Shumiao remained composed. She then successfully lifted 108kg and 111kg consecutively in the clean & jerk, ultimately securing the bronze medal. Her tenacious fighting spirit and excellent technical performance won widespread acclaim both on and off the field.
