Jianghan University


Jianghan University (JHUN) is a public multidisciplinary university in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province. It is co-built by the municipal and provincial governments, but mainly endorsed by the former. At the approval of Ministry of Education, four universities and colleges—the old Jianghan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology Hankou Branch, Wuhan University of Education, and Wuhan Medical College for Workers merged to form Jianghan University in October 2001. In June 2002, the school moved as a whole to the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) .

In 2018, JHUN was selected into the provincial list of “Double First-Class Initiative”, and its chemical engineering and technology discipline would participate in the country’s construction plan of first-class academic disciplines. In 2019, Xie Xianqi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, joined the faculty of JHUN, availing it to be the first university with a full-time academician among Hubei province-owned universities. JHUN’s Material Forming and Control Engineering was selected into the list of national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and other 17 undergraduate majors into the list of provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, both released by the Ministry of Education.

The main campus of JHUN is located in a place of legends and folk tales, which used to be within the territory of Kingdom Chu. To its east lies the Yangtze River, and to its north is the Hanshui River, The land has profound cultural atmosphere and pleasant environment. The rippling Sijiaohu Lake reflects the facades of the buildings on campus and the winding Qingyuan River flows placidly through the campus. The peach trees, plum trees, acer palmatum trees, wintersweet trees, golden aster, lotus flower make campus  so gorgeous that walking on it in different seasons one will appreciate different flavors.

The university occupies approximately 133 hectares (about 2,000 mu) and its buildings have a gross floor area of 800, 000 square meters. The student apartments are equipped with living facilities like private toilets, air-conditioners, washing machines. The six canteens are very popular among JHUN students as well as netizens. The campus is close to the local civic services center, commercial center and the headquarters of the mega enterprises. It is an excellent place for study, research, work and living.

JHUN boasts 75 undergraduate programs, and 8 first-level disciplines for academic master’s degree and 9 graduate programs for professional master’s degree. The undergraduate programs cover 11 disciplines including economics, law, education science, literature, history, science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, management science and arts. Of the disciplines, 5 are provincial-level key disciplines and 2 are provincial-level clusters of featured disciplines. There are 2 state-level featured undergraduate programs, one state-level comprehensive reform project, 2 provincial-level flagship undergraduate programs, 5 provincial-level comprehensive reform projects, 9 undergraduate programs of provincial-level strategic emerging (or pillar) industry talents cultivation project, and 8 provincial-level Hubei Outstanding Talent education programs. There is also one national-level Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), 17 courses of provincial-level quality and 33 quality courses.

JHUN has attached great importance to its teaching and research. Xie Xianqi, director of the academic committee of the university, is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a recipient of special government allowances from the State Council. He has won awards like the National Science and Technology Progress Award and others. His academic level in the engineering blasting field is in leading position both in China and in the world. In addition, two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering are dual-employed there. JHUN’s full-time teaching staff reaches 1,209 in number including 188 professors and 482 associate professors. 45.5% teachers are holders of doctor’s degree.Two teachers were selected in national-level talent programs, and 34 teachers in the provincial-level talent programs. Now JHUN has a high-level faculty with national-level teachers as leading force, provincial-level teachers as backbone force, young and middle-aged doctoral teachers as key force. Many teachers have been awarded titles such as “National Excellent Teacher”, “Chutian Gardener Award”, and “Jingchu Good Teacher”; many have won awards in teaching contests such as the National College Ideological and Political Theory Teaching Exhibition, and the National College Teacher Teaching and Guidance Skills Competition.

Synergy of the university, institutes and enterprises yields rich findings. There are 17 provincial or ministerial level research platforms, 4 provincial practice and training bases, 4 provincial innovation bases for graduate education and provincial graduates workstations. Among them, Hubei (Wuhan) Institute of Explosion Science and Blasting Technology is the first institute in China to research on engineering blasting theory and technology. In the past five years, the faculty of JHUN has conducted more than 1,500 scientific research projects, including more than 110 national fund projects supported by National Social Science Foundation, as well as more than 10 projects related to 863 Program (a government program that was created in the third month of 1986 to stimulate the development of advanced technologies). The university also boasts its faculty's over 2,000 research papers being indexed by SCI, EI and CPCI, as well as over 300 books and textbooks. More than 130 prizes were awarded for its research work. Its intellectual property portfolios include over 1,500 issued patents, among which over 300 are patents for invention. The number of patent applications and issued patents ranks the top among the universities in Hubei Province. The University has cooperated with more than 100 local enterprises to build more than 20 bases and laboratories jointly built by the university, institutes and enterprises. JHUN’s students also have a high profile in scientific research capabilities. Many undergraduates and postgraduates have published papers in international academic journals, and an outstanding undergraduate have been admitted to the doctoral degree program of Peking University. Jianghan Academic was selected into CSSCI extended source journals (2019-2020).

JHUN has cultivated more than 150,000 talents for Wuhan city, for Hubei Province, and for China. A large number of its excellent alumni are dedicated to work and becomes backbones and leaders in their positions, practicing the JHUN motto i.e. “Virtue, Application, Inclusiveness, Innovation”. In the past five years, more than 70 scientific and technological findings have been transferred and commercialized. Among them, the projects including the halogen-free flame retardant film and the new cowpea have generated industrial, social and economic returns valuing two billion yuan. The polyimide substrate for flexible display preparation technology was successfully transferred to Dinglong Holding Co., Ltd., changing the status quo that all flexible display substrate materials were dependent on imports. The university has also established 6 companies for scientific and technological findings industrialization, one of which has been listed on the New OTC (Over the Counter) Market. The university has been approved as the first equity incentive pilot university in Wuhan for the application of scientific and technological advances. As a high-end think tank, the Institute of Wuhan Studies has provided a large number of high-level consultancy services for the local government. Wuhan Jiangda Chedu Women’s Football Club is the only football club whose players are students at university and compete meanwhile in the Women’s Super League. Many of them are the main players of the present national football team. In Covid-19 pandemic, the affiliated hospital admitted 1,393 confirmed and suspected inpatients. The fever clinic received a total of 13,000 visits. Zhu Guochao, the physician from Critical Care Medicine Department, was honored the Outstanding Individual for his performance in fighting Covid-19 by National Health Commission. The alumna Xia Sisi died fighting Covid-19 and was honored as National March 8 Red-Banner Holders and awarded China May 4th Youth Medal.

The open JHUN values international communication and cooperation, and has established stable links of academic exchange and cooperation with over 53 universities in 21 countries and regions.The JHUN dragon boat team won the championship for two consecutive years in the Uganda Dragon Boat Race and was praised by Wang Yang, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, who visited Uganda then. Afterwards, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, visited Jianghan university. The University cooperated with Athlone Institute of Technology in the Republic of Ireland to set up Sino-foreign cooperative education programs. It also established more than ten inter-school exchange programs and student exchange programs with universities in the United States, Germany, France, Japan and so on. Now more than 300 international students are studying in Jianghan University. The university has also established 12 international joint laboratories including the Nano Biomedical Engineering Center.

The university takes undergraduate education as its major mission, furthers graduate educationand develops its education of foreign students as well as vocational and continuous trainings.
